3 out of 5 stars Performs as advertised   July 24, 2010

I was a little disappointed to find that this unit is tied to a single web site, [...]. It cannot use other internet sources such as pandora. All of the stations we're interested in are available, however. It takes quite a while to connect to the network, and to the station. About 30 seconds or so. Twice so far it has failed to connect to a station in the morning as alarm, even though the wifi strength in that room is good. Retrying worked though.

Although the radio can download new firmware if it's available, there is no information on either the Sanyo or the reciva web site about firmware upgrades.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money   July 18, 2010

Received this as a gift at Christmas and worked for about 6 months. Then it all of sudden cannot connect to the home network (which it had been doing successfully for 6 months). Made several attempts to troubleshoot - unplug and reconnect, tried re-configuring (no response). Did the same for the wireless router, but to no avail. Now it's just a blackbox sitting on the table. Sanyo support has been notifed but no response yet - and not likely to hear from them.

1 out of 5 stars do not buy   May 12, 2010

Started having trouble with the radio one month after the 90 day warranty ran out. It quit working when it was six months old. I contacted customer service via e-mail (no contact tel.#) they answered telling what to do to fix it, and said that if this did not fix it that the cost to fix it would be $100 or more. So it is a $150 dollar piece of junk. Buy something that has a better warranty, and better customer service.

2 out of 5 stars Has a few good points, but often unreliable .   April 26, 2010

I bought my Sanyo internet radio from Amazon last year, and waited a long time before putting in my "2 cents" worth in. My opinion has ranged from wanting to give it 1 or 2 stars, to giving it 5. It quite often has trouble connecting to my network. At first I thought it was due to the Wi/Fi. So I tried it with a network cable and had simular dismal results. Sometimes it takes 5 or more minutes to connect, and other times it connects almost instantly. And occasionally it will disconnect while I am listening to it. And when not in use it will turn itself on if the power is interrupted momentarily. Very annoying.

Well, there is some good news too. I am sure that I don't need to go into detail about internet radio. This unit uses the Reciva service, which I like very much. I like how you can save your favorite stations on their website, then access them from the radio. So this makes up for the measly 8 direct station presets it has. Sound quality is pretty good, but not exactly room filling. I use the line out jack and usually play it thru my large home stereo for great sound. Sound quality and volume varies some with different stations. The unit is attractive and well constructed. It is made of a heavy black plastic with a nice gloss finish. The front panel is aluminum and the knob has a rubber grip for ease of use. And the remote takes it's styling cues from the radio, being constructed of simular materials and having a simular shape.

So I decided to give this unit 4 stars. I do wonder if others have simular problems with the network conection. But it does work well most of the time.

I recently purchased another internet radio. One by V-tech, which I will review seperately. But now that I have another like product to compare the Sanyo to I am reducing my rating of it to 2 stars. The Sanyo was not only my first internet radio, but also my first wi-fi device. So I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from one. Well, there isn't much comparison between it and the V-tech radio. The V-tech has absolutely no problem connecting to the internet. It takes just a few seconds compared with the few minutes the Sanyo takes. That is if the Sanyo conects at all. The V-tech also gives complete station and song information on it's display. Plus the V-techs display is much more pleasing and easy on the eyes. The Sanyo only gives some information on a handful of stations. Plus if the electricity blinks off and on, the Sanyo will turn on and sit there trying to connect to nothing until I shut it off. A stoppage in power has no effect on the V=tech. So there are much better choices than the Sanyo for anyone looking to get into internet radio.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but one problem   March 13, 2010

Nice radio easy to set up radio stations but you cant dim the display when its playing. So if you like to listen to music or talk at night your room will have a bright blue glow to it, unless you cover the display. Talked to customer support and the said no planned firmware upgrade to allow one to dim it. I think this issue is not one on every wifi radio, just sanyo. Also you should get an account with recvia as some more popular stations do not show up in the radios list. Just add them to 'my stations' in recvia and you can access them on the unit. Nice sounding and attractive unit
